2nd Regional West Africa Immunology Course

The EDCTP Alumni Network HIV Working group was represented by Dr Michael Owusu (CDF1033) from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology at the recently held second Regional West Africa Immunology Course.

Sophia Osawe, MPH, AIMLS, Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria was also supported to attend.

The training took place in Ouidah, 45 km from Cotonou from the 3rd to 9th November 2019. Faculty from Germany, Canada, Benin and South Africa were part of the trainers from different expertise in Immunology. There were a total of 49 trainees from different part of West and East Africa including a few from Germany.

The training covered topics ranging from T-cell and B-cell immunity to Antigen presenting cells, NK cells and how they are involved in immunity against tropical diseases. The diseases of focus during the training were Malaria, Helminths infections, HIV and a few emerging diseases (Ebola) and Neglected diseases (Filariasis).

EDCTP has become a member of Europe PMC (PubMed Central), an open science platform that maintains a worldwide collection of scientific articles and research outputs. Joining Europe PMC enables EDCTP-funded researchers to share their publications via one central location. Sharing publications by EuropePMC ensures that they will also satisfy the requirements for EDCTP-funded research projects: making publications openly accessible as soon as possible. EDCTP invites all EDCTP grantees to attend a training webinar on 16 March at 09:00 UTC. This webinar will introduce the EDCTP open access policy and provide step-by-step guidance on how to comply with the policy and deposit research manuscripts using the Europe PMC plus submission system for inclusion in Europe PMC and PMC USA.

Congratulations to Dr Faith Osier who has taken over as the President of the International Union of Immunological Societies

As of October 2019, Dr Faith Osier (TMA2015SF1001) is the president of the International Union of Immunological Societies (https://iuis.org/about/who-we-are/executive-council/) for a three year term.

The International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) is an umbrella organization for many of the regional and national societies of immunology throughout the world. As articulated in its Constitution, the objectives of IUIS are:

  • to organize international co-operation in immunology and to promote communication between the various branches of immunology and allied subjects
  • to encourage within each scientifically independent territory co-operation between the Societies that represent the interests of immunology
  • to contribute to the advancement of immunology in all its aspects.

Dr Osier was also recently appointed as a #TOGETHERBAND Amasssador for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health & Well Being.

This week Dr Osier gave a Spotlight talk at the Grand Challenges meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
